Who Am I?

A high school drama teacher once told Nathan not to rush into university — go get real-life experience first. So he did, spending years acting and directing across the Gold Coast Community Theatre scene. In 2015, he won Best Director (and tied for Outstanding Community Production) for Accomplice at the Gold Coast Theatre Palm Awards.

That same year he moved into independent work, premiering two immersive site-specific ghost stories in Brisbane for Anywhere Festival — Lights Out Vol. 1 (2015) and The Curiosity Experiment, which went on to tour Melbourne Fringe (2016) and Adelaide Fringe (2017). From there, traditional scripts started getting the same site-specific treatment — and The Drama Merchant was born. Browse past productions →

Nathan’s stayed close to that world ever since — now as President of the Gold Coast Theatre Alliance and Vice President of Tugun Theatre Company Inc. Most community and independent theatre runs on people who show up for little or no pay, purely because they love it — and Nathan’s just as passionate about the people as the productions: encouraging others to chase a creative life, but to chase it smart, building real skills without staking everything on one shot at fame. Not everything that shaped him happened on a stage. Life has handed Nathan some genuinely hard chapters — the kind that test who you are, not just what you can perform — and what got him through was the same creative thinking he’d trained for the theatre, turned toward rebuilding his own life. He calls it Creative Courage — the belief that using your creativity, not just for the stage or screen but as a tool for real life, takes courage. And so does accepting and building a legacy from it, whatever form that takes. It’s also what makes him worth having in the room — someone who doesn’t just talk about resilience and creativity, but has actually lived it.
