"The children absolutely loved the incursion and really enjoyed the dramatic play. The props really set the scene and inspired the children to participate. Some of our particularly drama-loving children really enjoyed having an outlet to express their creativity."

"The look of wonder on the children’s faces was amazing to observe, they enjoyed the different sounds and have been heard creating their own sounds after the performance was over and days later. I felt Nathan’s performances really opened up their little minds to the wonders that are around them and to explore their imagination."

THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO

Ages: 4 TO 12+        Run Time: 60min        Min 10 - Max 30 participants per session

Once people used reading and writing as their primary source of communication, but nowadays listening and watching are all the rage. In fact, we have been watching – film and TV – for decades. but now listening is becoming fashionable as the cyber world offers a smorgasbord of audio entertainments.

In the 1920s, ‘30s, ‘40s and even ‘50s, sitting around the radio – or wireless as some called it – to take in a popular series, children’s drama, crime show or horror story as well as comedy and variety programs was a family ritual.
In first part of this workshop, participants are introduced to this retro audio form of storytelling, known as a radio play, which is considered the very first pod cast, before they try to perform sound effects in 4 short audio scenes.

Sound Scenes include are Captain Midnight, War of the Worlds, Around the World in 80 Days and Dracula. Participants watch The Drama Merchant for their cues as they put sound effects such as airplanes, explosions, heat rays, horses, trains, boats, elephants, wolves and thunderstorms to the aforementioned Sound Scenes.

In the second part, The Drama Merchant will then perform a 6 minute one man show, with some audience participation, as he brings to life the next thrilling episode of Treasure Island!

VISION OF SOUND

Ages: 4 TO 12+        Run Time: 45min        Min 10 - Max 30 participants per session

Encouraging teamwork, group awareness and imagination participants in this workshop will become ‘Sound Creators’. Working together they will create a sound scene, without the need of visual stimulus, to capture the attention and imagination of the listener. Instruments of sound will be allocated, with a time set for rehearsing, as like a conductor of an orchestra The Drama Merchant will guide the Sound Creators in creating a vision of sound using only their imagination.

The scene will be recorded and played back, and for those who are do not wish to actively participate in workshop they can wear blindfolds, to see if the group helped them understand what happened in creating a vision of sound.

This workshop was included in the 2019 Sensory orchestration for new learning and teaching project, supported by the ACU institute for learning services & teacher education. Information can be found on www.sensestogether.com
